What is a Rain Garden?

Build a Rain Garden in your backyard
Blue River Watershed Association actively promotes the use of Rain Gardens as beautiful ways to reduce pollution in our streams and rivers while beautifully landscaping our community! BRWA has worked with the Discovery Center and with other partners to educate the community about the beneficial uses of Rain Gardens, and to install demonstration projects. BRWA can assist neighborhood associations, civic groups and others in learning about the beauty and effectiveness of Rain Gardens.

With funding from the EPA and the Mid-America Regional Council, the BRWA installed 2 beautiful Rain Gardens in the spring of 2006. The Trailside Center Rain Garden was installed adjacent to the KCMO Fire Station and the Trailside Center at 99th and Holmes. BRWA partnered with a number of public and private organizations on the Rain Garden, including Jim Schuessler of BNIM Architects who designed the garden, Patti Banks Associates, Kansas City Parks and Recreation, and the Historical Society of New Santa Fe.

BRWA also worked with science teacher P.J. Born and his students at Shawnee Mission South to install a Rain Garden on their school property. Students took responsibility for the design and installation of the Rain Garden, including building a rock splash and rock retaining wall for the area. An awesome student project!

BRWA is part of the 10,000 Rain Gardens program in metro KC. Go to www.rainkc.com for more information about this important community initiative!
