Current Rain Garden Project
BRWA and Linden Hills Homes Association
Install Neighborhood Rain Garden
BRWA worked together with the Linden Hills Homes Association to install a rain garden in their neighborhood at 99th and Lydia. The homes association had noticed an area where rainwater was gathering and causing wash out in a neighbor’s yard. BRWA suggested a rain garden as a possible solution.
For several weeks, BRWA and Linden Hills planned the project – gathering supplies, volunteers and arranging to have plants provided for installation. Audrie Seeley & Company LLC, at 9300 Holmes, supplied the native plants for the project. Jim Schuessler, from BNIM Architects (and also a homes association member), drew up the plans for the planting and directed neighbors during the installation.
Along with 15 homes association members, BRWA installed several different types of plants, including Prairie blazing star, milkweed, goldenrod, big bluestem grass and purple coneflower. These native Missouri plants will be sure to utilize any extra water in the ground to grow deep roots, helping to stop washout and yard flooding. Not only are the flowers hard workers, they’re beautiful, too! Within one year, this rain garden will need little to no maintenance.
See below for pictures of the installation process, the completed garden, and check back as we will add pictures to show its progress. It was hard work in the hot sun, but the finished product was well worth the effort!
