The Blue River Watershed Association is committed to providing the safest and most valuable educational experience as possible for students when testing water quality. Being at a water site with students can be challenging, but the following tips can make the experience educational and enjoyable for the students as well as the volunteers.

Be sure you are familiar with the tests and procedures being used. Preview directions ahead of time.
Keep students focused and engaged by assigning tasks. Several tests can be run at the same time.
Make sure test directions are being followed as accurately as possible. If a question arises you are not comfortable answering, send a student to find a BRWA person for further clarification.
Be a good role model. Wear gloves and goggles and make sure students do the same.
Keep track of time. Students usually have less than 45 minutes to complete 9 tests.
Keep unused equipment in the kit and not on the ground. Report any broken or lost equipment to BRWA.
Be sure to put the nitrate waste water in the plastic bottle labeled "Nitrogen Waste."
Please feel comfortable in sending any student who seems to be having cooperation problems to the teacher. As a volunteer, you deserve to be respected!
